How we review.
The method behind every guide and every product we recommend, written down so you can hold us to it.
Guides: how we use research
We rank evidence roughly in this order, and tell you which kind a claim rests on:
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses that pool many studies.
- Randomised controlled trials, with attention to size, duration and who took part.
- Observational studies, which can show associations but rarely prove cause and effect.
- Expert consensus statements and clinical guidelines.
We read the study, not just the press release, and we link to it. Where results are mixed or the research is young, we say so plainly. We do not cite studies we have not read.
Products: how we test
When we review a product, we aim to:
- Use it in real mornings for long enough to learn its habits, not just its first impression.
- Compare it with the realistic alternatives at a similar price, including the cheap and free ones.
- Check the claims a brand makes against what the research supports.
- Note the costs that are easy to miss: subscriptions, replacement parts, apps, warranties.
- Say who it is best for, and who should skip it.
Where a recommendation is based on research and specifications rather than hands-on testing, the article says so.
What decides a ranking
Rankings reflect how well a product solves the problem for the people we name as its best fit, then value for money. Commission rates, free samples and brand relationships play no part. Brands cannot pay to be included, to move up a list, or to review an article before it is published.
Free samples and loans
Sometimes brands send products to test. We treat them exactly like products we buy, we disclose it in the review, and the brand gets no say over what we write.
Keeping reviews current
Products change, prices change and new research arrives. We revisit our guides and roundups regularly and show the date of the last meaningful update at the top of each article.
